Thorpe Park's 4D theatre has, since its inception in 1999, had both highlights and lowlights - from hosting the UK's first ever 4D show with the well-scripted and funny Pirates 4D, to later switching to the dire and incomprehensible 4D film from sister-park Gardaland, Time Voyagers, and subsequently shuttering altogether a few years later. Fast-forward to 2014, and after 2 years of non-operation, the theatre is back in use again, screening a world-exclusive brand new 4D movie, Angry Birds 4D Experience.
The film was jointly developed by both Rovio (the creators of the popular smartphone game) and 4D animators 3DBA, and the theatre was completely re-fitted with a new screen, new seating and new effects from Simworx. The result is that the attraction feels more sophisticated than that at sister Park Alton Towers, whose recent new Ice Age 4D installation has guests sitting on basic rows of wooden boxes.
The film itself is a hit: humorous, easy to follow, and lending itself to a wide range of effects. The 10-minute simple story features, predictably, the Green Pigs attempting to steal 3 precious eggs from the group of Angry Birds. What is nice is that the film draws on all parts of the Angry Birds franchise, including sections from Angry Birds Space, Bad Piggies, and Angry Birds Go! There is no dialogue, ensuring that all visitors - young or old, local resident or international tourist - can enjoy the experience. In all, the presentation is well done, and although the show building itself could have been better themed (the theatre inside is quite sparse), it does at least make it easy for the Park to switch movies in future years.
The "4D" elements are worth a mention. During the movie, effects include seat movements, vibrations, water sprays, air blasts, leg ticklers, bubbles, smoke and special effects lighting. By far the most inventive effect is the "catapult movement", where every time a bird is launched at a pig, the theatre's chairs all rock back and ping forward as if the audience were part of the action. Unfortunately this effect is perhaps overused (catapulting happens a lot during the film!), as is the water spray, which is deployed every time the green pig blows a raspberry at the birds - also a frequent occurrence.
Angry Birds 4D Experience is a great new addition for families, and adds a much-needed indoor attraction to Thorpe Park's mainly-outdoor ride lineup. Audiences invariably come out of the attraction laughing and excitable; exactly what a solid family attraction should deliver. Make it a part of your next visit!

"Angry Birds 4D Experience is a good ride to go on if you have small children and there is a short queue. My favourite part of this attraction is when you first go into the cinema and sit down, because the tension is really building!"
